Rhythmic pilgrimage with a Japanese cult band.
Inspired by the rhythms and patterns of the Japanese language and Indian raga, Asa-Chang & Junray create a soundscape where rhythms and voices are chopped up, repeated, and varied in countless patterns.
Their music has been described as futuristic folklore or avant-garde electro-pop, and for the electronic elements, they use Jun-Ray Tronics, the band's custom sound system. ‘Junray’ means pilgrimage, reflecting the band's quest to take their music to new places.
Asa-Chang & Junray have been touring since 1997 in various line-ups – today as a trio with violinist Anzu Suhara and saxophonist Yoshihiro Goseki.
'An absolute highlight is reached with a performance of 花, an intense track with heavy string parts, exciting percussion, multi-part spoken word and – not on record but only live – terrifying screams.' – GONZO CIRCUS
Asa-Chang percussion, tablabongo
Yoshihiro Goseki saxophone, flute, vocal
Anzu Suhara violin, guitar, vocal
