Jewels for viola.
Sara Ferrández, born in Madrid, has a deep love for both chamber music and flamenco. Music permeated her upbringing; her father and brother are both cellists, and her mother was a professional flamenco guitarist who went on to study classical music.
Ferrández herself chose the viola and is dedicated to bringing her instrument to a broader audience. She even launched a YouTube channel to share her daily life as a professional musician and has performed in some of the world’s largest concert halls. In 2023, she released her first EP, En La Intimidad, featuring her favorite composer Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G Major. Originally composed for solo cello, this suite has been called 'the essence of Bach's genius'. In Troldsalen, the concert hall beside Edvard Grieg’s home, she performs this piece solo on viola.
Joining her in Bergen is the American pianist Julia Hamos, with whom she will play Grieg’s Sonata No. 3, written at Troldhaugen in 1887, in a version for viola and piano. (The original violin and piano version will also be performed by James Ehnes and Orion Weiss at this year’s festival.) Additionally, the duo will perform a piece from Ferrández’s homeland, de Falla’s Seven Popular Spanish Songs, which draws on the Spanish folk music that shaped her upbringing.
