Culture wars as Russian roulette.

The last time the Norway-based (and state-financed) art interventionists shook up Bergen and the Festival was in 2014 with Kardemomyang, where prodigies from North Korea’s most prestigious music school performed their take on Norwegian cultural heritage and society through the songs of Torbjørn Egner’s beloved children’s book When the Robbers came to Cardamom Town

This time, Morten Traavik and his squad return with the world premiere of The Wastefulness Commission, an open and impartial self-examination of personal networks and the use of public funding in Norwegian cultural life – or, as Festival director Beyer puts it: ‘putting the gun to our own temple’.

The project’s High Commissioner and Grand Inquisitor is the culture warrior and Facebook phenomenon Sløseriombudsmannen (The Wastefulness Ombudsman) and its 50,000 current followers.

The Wastefulness Commission’s first public incarnation is divided into two episodes: an introductory presentation at Den Nationale Scene, Lille Scene on the Festival’s opening day 20 May, and a Final Reckoning where the Commission’s recommendations are presented in the festival tent at Festplassen on 31 May.

Both performances are presented in Norwegian without surtitles.

‘There is a war between the rich and poor,
a war between the man and a woman.
There is a war between those who say there is a war
and those who say there isn’t.’
