A voice of pure gold.
'Nothing less than 24-carat gold,' The New York Times wrote about Joyce DiDonato's voice. The American mezzo-soprano boasts three Grammy Awards, an extensive, critically acclaimed discography, and a concert career that regularly takes her around the world.
This is her first appearance at the Bergen International Festival, where she will perform at Grieghallen with American pianist Craig Terry. Their programme offers several perspectives on the feminine in classical music.
Only 17 songs by Alma Mahler have survived. She was also the the wife and muse of Gustav Mahler (and several other artists), and this evening you can hear song cycles composed by both Mahlers. Haydn’s moving cantata Arianna a Naxos tells the story of Princess Ariadne, perhaps the most deeply hurt woman in Greek mythology, and Debussy’s Trois Chansons de Bilitis paints a vision of ancient womanhood as imagined by 19th-century artists.
Joyce DiDonato has a strong commitment to the social impact of music and has had a long-standing collaboration with Sing Sing correctional facility in New York. During the Bergen International Festival, she will also give a masterclass to young singers.
